POSITION SUMMARY – This position is based in Rooifontein and Nourivier in Northern Cape, South Africa
CSA’s Namaqualand Green Economic Demonstration aims to restore high-biodiversity rangelands with functional water ecosystems underpinned by good governance and sustainable land management practices to support sustainable and vibrant livelihoods, climate change resilience, and adaptation of local communities.
In the rangeland the Jobs for Nature Supervisors are responsible for catalysing NGED’s conservation stewardship program and restoration on the ground with communal livestock farmers who holds conservation agreements, in close collaboration with the farmers’ organization with which Conservation South Africa holds umbrella conservation agreements, enabling farmers to implement the terms of their conservation agreements to ensure the restoration of their valuable and diverse rangelands.
The Jobs for Nature Supervisor will educate land-users on sustainable resource management, ensuring compliance with NGED’s Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) system and alignment with conservation objectives. The role contributes to Conservation South Africa’s NGED data baselines through accurate field data collection and reporting. It further promotes the inclusion of women, young girls, and the LGBTQIA+ community across rangeland activities, fostering equity within Ecosystem-based Adaptation initiatives.
The position involves engaging and training communal livestock farmers and herders on sustainable practices, including the Grazing Guidelines and Herding4Health principles, and promoting responsible resource use within rangeland areas. The Supervisor will coordinate and conduct field surveys, gather and submit ground-level data, provide training on good animal welfare and resource stewardship, and facilitate community sessions on climate change awareness and adaptation strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Familiarize and train communal livestock farmers and herders in the implementation of the Grazing Guidelines and Herding4Health Principles
- Train a farmer’s herders on the Herding for Health implementation sites (Commonage areas) on the implementation of the Grazing Guidelines and the Herding4Health Principles.
- Participate in the design of Grazing Guidelines for the commonages.
- Present the Grazing Guidelines to the farmers’ organizations, both new farmers and those who hold conservation agreements with Conservation South Africa.
- Conduct a baseline and follow up with annual surveys to measure adoption and behaviour change with regards to the Grazing Guidelines and Herding4Health principles.
Ensure the timely gathering and submission of adequate data regarding livestock management, grazing management, water infrastructure, socio-economic data
- Conduct baseline surveys on the above, as require, and submit to the NGED Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) Team; – Collaborate with conservation agreement signatory livestock farmers, herders and the local farmers organization with which Conservation South Africa holds a conservation agreement to comply with Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) activities as per the conservation agreements they signed;
- Coordinate with MERL team to provide feedback to farmers, the community, and organizations on the results of data gathered, at least once a year.
Ensuring the inclusion of women, young girls and the LGBTQIA+ community in Rangeland Restoration and Ecosystem-based Adaptation
- Engage with women and LGBTQIA+ livestock farmers and community members to encourage their participation in rangeland/ocean restoration and ecosystem-based activities;
- Engage with farmers’ organizations holding conservation agreements with Conservation South Africa to actively work towards including women and the LGBTQIA+ community in conservation stewardship activities;
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and communities, identifying opportunities for collaboration and partnership.
Ensure Operational Excellence and Compliance
- Ensure that all due procedures for procurement, travel, and events are complied with.
- Fill out and submit timesheets correctly and timely.
- Comply with all other Operational and Human Resource requirements of the organization.
Community Workshops on Climate Change and Adaptation
- Hold community training events on Climate Change and adaptation.
- Capture climate change challenges experienced in the community.
- Communicate climate change adaptation plans to the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The positions are to be based in the villages of Rooifontein and Nourivier.
- The role is a fixed-term contract for two years- to be extended as funding allows.
- Normal office hours will be adhered to with flexibility expected when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Up to 2 years of experience.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people and stakeholders.
- Experience in supervising teams or programmes.
Preferred
- Experience in soil restoration.
- Experience and/or thorough knowledge of livestock farming.
- Experience of critical nature relevant conditions around the operation area/site.
- Experience in community engagement, training, and capacity building with communal farmers.
- Fluent in Afrikaans.
- Speak, read, and write English.
- Some experience and understanding of oceans/rangeland climate change trends.
- Driver’s License.
