What We Are Looking For

The Clinical Informaticist serves as a vital liaison between the IT department and healthcare professionals. Leads, designs and implements system solutions to improve the full spectrum of health care services from patient access scheduling, direct patient care visits, ancillary services, and revenue cycle. Encompass strong clinical background who can support healthcare outpatient clinic system with research and organization of clinical knowledge in structured forms for clinical decision support systems to optimize clinic productivity through optimized clinic room usage. The clinical informaticist leverages clinical experience, critical thinking, and analytics to identify and to improve the healthcare systems workflows for patient, family, and clinician experience. The position is responsible for leading the development of analytics solutions for SAC Health room utilization by gathering business needs, documenting requirements, identifying appropriate data sources, developing reports, provide various analytics solutions and delivering them to stakeholders. Documents and recommends workflow changes and functional requirements and specifications to support the business requirements. This role will serve as a liaison to bridge the gap between clinical practice providers and health system clinic infrastructure.

Accountable for creating and implementing new clinic patient workflow models, conduct pilot testing of new workflow models involving all processes from patient check-in to check-out at the completion of the visit. Coordinate new clinic workflow to encompass all medical specialties and provider categories within Sac Health (Attendee providers, fellows, residents, students and APPs). Formulate data capture methods and reports to demonstrate efficacy of new clinic workflow to optimize clinic room usage in a sustainable model.

Schedule: 4 days per week, 10 hours per day, Tuesday - Friday, 7:00am-5:30pm | Location: Brier Clinic, San Bernardino, CA

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DELIVERABLES

  • Assist in assessing the current state, analyzing clinical workflows and processes, and identifying opportunities for health care improvement in the design of future-state processes in room optimization and technology usage in clinic space.
  • Utilize data to identify and drive clinical practice and workflow changes related to clinic space usage and optimized capacity with measurable outcomes.
  • Conduct research on clinic space demand, usage, and project for potential evaluation and adoption. Independently develops timelines, workflow diagrams, provides ongoing updates to clinical leadership, and ensures on time delivery of high quality, effective, compliant workflows.
  • Collaborates and consults with internal and external clinicians, residents, nurses, informaticists, application analysts, trainers and system architects to share knowledge and expertise and determine the best possible solution for workflow, clinical, and system concerns to improve patient care.
  • Utilize standard tools to document and analyze systems to present comprehensive solutions addressing organizational goals to stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and creation of a sustainable clinic room management system.
  • Serves as key link with clinical staff and project sponsors (IT liaison). Act as a liaison between clinical care and information technology, supporting all clinical staff throughout the care continuum in the implementation, learning use, adoption, and optimization of the electronic medical record (Epic). Must work alongside Clinical Applications Manager, Epic Training Manager, IT Project Managers, Directors, Nursing Management and Medical Directors.
  • Conducts technical workflow process diagrams and performs gap analysis related to process improvement, optimization projects, special task forces and ongoing events related to compliance best practices.
  • Responsible for solution testing and supports user acceptance before any implementation related to epic functionality being enabled.
  • Lead and facilitates all clinical informatics-based projects assigned by CMO/CIO using ongoing process improvement, project management and change management techniques.
  • Promotes highest attainable quality in the full life cycle of clinical information systems related to patient care.
  • Travel to other clinics/offices as necessary; must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver's license, and auto insurance.
  • Ability to be flexible and a proponent of change to drive improvements, while recognizing the impacts of change across users and areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Computer Science, Information Systems, Clinical Informatics or related field. Masters degree preferred. Experience in lieu of degree will be considered - see experience.
  • Licensure/Certification: Valid California driver's license, and auto insurance.  EPIC certification within one year of hire is required for the specified specialty (Ambulatory).  Preferred certifications: EPIC certifications in Cogito, Clarity, and/or Caboodle, Six Sigma certification for process improvement methodology and/or Lean management certification, AHIMA healthcare certifications in (RHIA)
    registered health information administrator, (RHIT) registered health information technician.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of healthcare experience is required (in lieu of a degree, 5+ years of healthcare experience is required) AND clinical application support and/or informatics-related experience, project management, quality improvement or clinical research, a strong understanding of clinical processes related to integrated clinical systems, proficiency in using health information systems (including EMR systems like EPIC) required. The ability to design data visualizations and dashboards for end-user-friendly presentation and metrics, workflow analysis, process improvement and implementing solutions for clinical staff and demonstrated success in quality improvement or research projects, managing clinical information system optimization projects, familiarity with Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and large healthcare organizations. Nursing experience desirable.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Required - Proficient in O365 applications. Mastery level in MS Visio and PowerPoint. Preferred Tableau application experience. Proficient in Epic Reporting Workbench (RWB). Experience working with EHR systems.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to function independently at a high level while collaborating with the project team and stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to create strong relationships in a professional setting. Strong ability to discover and map clinical/business processes and associated data/insight needs. Strong self-directed organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects and assignments and deliver high quality work in a timely manner.
