The role of an Energy Management Co-op Student will be to support the Energy Management portfolio of Northern Health. This position will report to the Facilities Maintenance team and work closely with relevant departments such as Capital Planning, Finance, Support Services, and Clinical Operations. This structure ensures strong mentorship, collaborative learning, and alignment with project goals. There will be access to expertise in energy management, facilities operations, capital planning, as well as opportunities to engage with relevant project partners. This work will help to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and ensure quality data collection and analytics. This position is time-bound and focused on achieving significant impact within a defined period of approximately 4 months. The position is in person, supported by digital infrastructure for virtual collaboration. Some travel to Northern Health facilities may be required during the internship. Start and end dates are flexible and can be negotiated.

The hourly rate for this position is $21.25 to $30.48 per hour, and will be based on education, training, experience of similar positions.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled– or accepted for enrollment – in a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate program in engineering or another technical related field, and available for a 4-month full-time placement).
  • Currently enrolled graduate level students are also welcome to apply, and projects and compensation will be adjusted accordingly.
  • Lived experience in rural/remote communities is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with energy systems and health systems is preferred.
  • Courses completed in physics (or electrical, material and energy balances), chemistry (or thermodynamics, fluid mechanics), mathematics (or statistics, finance).
  • Courses completed in engineering design, project management, and technical writing are considered an asset.
  • Hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License (preferred).

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong research and synthesis skills, including experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., coding interviews, thematic analysis).
  • Strong understanding of energy and carbon calculations.
  • Enthusiasm about learning and comfortable working in a primarily online environment.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving project needs and work effectively in dynamic, collaborative environments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of common HVAC equipment is an asset.
  • Have knowledge of building operations and energy efficiency practices (an asset)
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for communication and outreach.
