Mechanical & Fabrication Specialist - 2nd Shift

We are seeking a high-drive specialist with a strong background in metal fabrication and welding to support the maintenance of our semi-automated and manual assembly lines. In this role, you will support safe, continuous production by performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on plant machinery, tools, and facility systems. Beyond standard preventive maintenance and repairs, you will be responsible for modifying and building custom fixtures, guards, and equipment enhancements to improve OEE and eliminate downtime based on the requirements of design teams. This role ensures critical equipment and infrastructure remain in optimal operating condition through troubleshooting, repairs, and continuous improvement activities. By reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency, the Mechanical & Fabrication Specialist plays a vital role in meeting production targets and quality standards.<br><br><strong>Duties/Responsibilities<br><br></strong><ul><li> Performs mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance and repairs on production equipment to ensure optimal functionality and minimize downtime.</li><li> Conducts routine preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on equipment, fixtures, and systems to support safe and continuous operations.</li><li> Maintains proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials generated through maintenance activities in compliance with regulations.</li><li> Supports a clean, safe, and team-oriented work environment by adhering to workplace policies and contributing to production quality and performance goals.</li><li> Design and fabricate custom brackets, safety guarding, and line improvements using MIG/TIG welding, torch cutting, and basic machining.</li><li> Diagnose and repair complex mechanical failures on semi-automated assembly equipment and fixtures.</li><li> Execute PM schedules to standard, identifying potential points of failure before they cause downtime.</li><li> Provide rapid response repair during production shifts to minimize "machine down" scenarios.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Required Qualifications (Education, Skills, & Experience)<br><br></strong><ul><li> High school diploma and/or GED with basic math skills and reading comprehension.</li><li> General understanding of industrial safety practices.</li><li> Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and maintenance manuals.</li><li> Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.</li><li> Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) entry.</li><li> Effective communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.</li><li> 3-5+ years in industrial maintenance within a manufacturing environment (Automotive or Heavy Truck experience preferred).</li><li> High proficiency in welding (Steel and Aluminum) and the ability to read blueprints or hand-drawn schematics.</li><li> Skilled in the use of shop equipment: cold saws, grinders, drill presses, and basic manual lathes/mills.</li><li> Proven ability to troubleshoot "new" or unique mechanical issues without a direct manual or hand-down instruction.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Preferred Qualifications (if Applicable)<br><br></strong><ul><li> Advanced training in industrial automation, PLC troubleshooting, or welding.</li><li> Experience with lean maintenance practices and reliability-centered maintenance.</li><li> A "self-starter" mentality—someone who looks for ways to improve the facility during gaps in repair calls.</li><li> Experience with pneumatic systems and basic electrical troubleshooting.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Work Environment/Conditions </strong>(Describes the physical demands and working conditions that are directly tied to the core duties of the role):<br><br><ul><li> Work is primarily performed indoors in a manufacturing facility; occasional outdoor work may be required for facility maintenance.</li><li> Regular exposure to loud noise, grease, oil, dust, electrical currents, and potentially hazardous materials.</li><li> Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders or stairs.</li><li> Manual dexterity required for operating tools and handling parts.</li><li> Regularly required to lift or move items up to 50 lbs; heavier lifting may require team assistance or equipment use.</li><li> Schedule may require rotating shifts, weekend work, overtime, or on-call duty to support 24/7 operations.</li><li> Designated as essential personnel during facility emergencies or operational disruptions.<br><br></li></ul>At the Volvo Group, we strive for a clear, transparent, and straightforward compensation approach, motivating you to contribute to the company’s growth.
